Christina Rossetti

Christina Rossetti (1830 – 1894) was an English poet perhaps best known for her poems “Goblin Market,” “Song [When I am dead my dearest],” and the Christmas hymn “In the Bleak Midwinter.”

The Lowest Place

Give me the lowest place: not that I dare
     Ask for that lowest place, but Thou hast died
That I might live and share
     Thy glory by Thy side.

Give me the lowest place: or if for me
     That lowest place too high, make one more low
Where I may sit and see
     My God and love Thee so.

Love Came Down at Christmas

Love came down at Christmas,
Love all lovely, love divine;
Love was born at Christmas,
Star and angels gave the sign.

Worship we the Godhead,
Love incarnate, love divine;
Worship we our Jesus:
But wherewith for sacred sign?

Love shall be our token,
Love shall be yours and love be mine,
Love to God and to all men,
Love for plea and gift and sign.
