Jodi McMaster is a recovering attorney, writer, and editor who suffers from terminal curiosity. Her lifelong addiction to books was the gateway drug to writing, which she can't seem to keep from doing, having begun in sixth grade with a play (mostly designed to get her out of PE). Her work, mostly nonfiction, has appeared in large publications such as American Heritage and smaller venues like cc&d. Her husband of over thirty years keeps her from completely disappearing into the written word.

Overcoming Memory Hoarding

When a loved one dies, distributing the big items (cars and houses) or the practical ones (dishes and furniture) seem to be straightforward, if not without conflict. The real problem seems to be what to do with the things that matter to the deceased: the carefully stored box of compasses of all sizes, the slide rule, the goggles, the meticulously kept records of flying hours.
